Bulgaria, is a country in the southeast of Europe. It borders the Black Sea to the east, Greece and Turkey to the south, Serbia and Montenegro and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Romania to the north along the river Danube.

In the late 7th century a branch of the Bulgars led by Khan Asparuh migrated into the northern Balkans, where they merged with the local Slavic population and possibly remnants of the Thracian population to form the first Bulgarian state in 681 AD. This was the first Slavic nation-state in history.

A distinctive feature of Balkan folk music is the asymmetrical meters, built up around various combinations of 'quick' and 'slow' beats. Many of the men's dances are formed by each man holding the belt or sash of the man on either side. These belts are typically fit loosely around the waist so that each person can move easily within the belt, while the overall line can stay together. Although there are basic steps that make up the dance, certain people may improvise variations, often forming a competition between the dancers. These variations must result in the same movement as the rest of the line, but may consist of additional or slightly different steps.

Kazi mi kazi mladi le momko
Kazi mi alen Karamfil
Gde rasna momko rasna porasna
Sila i hubost koj li to dade

Eh, eh, Karamfil
Partizanski majko, slaven komandir

Az veren sin sam, sin na Balkana
I rozovata dolina
Sila i hubost dar mi dariha
Kak da se borja te me uciha

Goro le goro, goro hajduska
I ti graniten nas Balkan
Dnes nie rasnem mladi junaci
Na Karamfila verni potomci

While a girl lives with her mother,
she is fair and rosy.

Tell me, tell me young lad
Tell me, you purple Karamfil
Where were you born and did you grow up
Who gave you strength and beauty

Eh, eh Karamfil
You partisan mother, true commander

I am a true son of the Balkan Mountains
And the Rose Valley
Strength and beauty they gave me
How to fight they taught me

Forest, you forest of the Hajduks
And you granite Balkan
Today we raise young heroes
Faithful descendents of Karamfil

Gjura beli belo platno
na rekata pod durvoto.

Chorus:
Ej he he he a ha ha ha

Promukno ga, natopa ga.

Pa dotece mutna voda
ta otvlece belo platno.

Ohno Gjura za platnoto.

“Lele male za platnoto
sto sum tkala tri godini."

Gjura was bleaching white cloth
at the river under a tree.

Chorus:
Ej he he he a ha ha ha
o ho ho ho i hi hi hi
ps ps ps ps jihu!

She wrung it and soaked it.

And then muddy water came along
and carried away the white cloth.

Gjura groaned for the cloth.

Oh Mama, the cloth
that I spent three years weaving!"

Let’s get up and join the dance Kalinke.
Despite those who are
opposed to our being close.
Both on your side and my side.
Both on your side and my side.

Hey young lad, young and wild.
How to dance near you when
my mother is watching from over there.
How to dance near you when
my mother is watching from over there.

Let your mother watch if she wants.
Mother to you, perhaps my future mother-in-law.
So let’s get up and dance near each other, despite the circumstances.
So let’s get up and dance near each other, despite the circumstances.

Hey young lad, young and wild.
How to dance near you when my father is also watching from over there.
How to dance near you when my father is also watching from over there.

Let your father watch if he wants.
Father to you, perhaps my future
father-in-law.
So let’s get up and dance near each other, despite the circumstances.
So let’s get up and dance near each other, despite the circumstances

Trugnala Rumjana za voda studena,

vse sutrin rano, po ladovina, lele
vse vecer kusno, po mesecina.

Nasresta ide edno ludo mlado, lele,
nasresta ide edno ludo mlado.

Rumjana went for cool water
early each morning in the morning coolness,
late each evening in the moonlight.

Towards her came a young lad.
He said quietly to Rumjana.

Tell me now, Rumjana, what shall I do to you:
If I steal your flowers, you’ll just pick others.
If I break your jugs,
you’ll buy yourself new ones,
even prettier and more colourful.

So now, Rumjana, let me kiss you,
for a kiss cannot be bought with money.

For a kiss is a salve for the heart,
a salve for the heart, a balm for the soul.
