Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea. Almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south.

Romania's culture is the product of its geographical position on Earth and of its distinct historical evolution. It is fundamentally defined as the meeting point of three regions: Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans, but cannot be truly included in any of them. The most striking thing about Romanian culture is the strong folk traditions which have survived to this day due to the rural character of the Romanian communities, which has resulted in an exceptionally vital and creative traditional culture. Romania's rich folk traditions have been nourished by many sources, some of which predate the Roman occupation.

Folk music is the oldest form of Romanian musical creation, characterized by great vitality; it is the defining source of the cultured musical creation, both religious and lay. Conservation of Romanian folk music has been aided by a large and enduring audience, and by numerous performers who helped propagate and further develop the folk sound.

Alunelu, alunelu hai la joc,
sá ne fie, sá ne fie cu noroc!
Cine-n hora o sá joace
mare, mare se va face.
Cine n-o juca de fel
va ramine mititel.

Alunelul, alunelul hai la joc,
sá ne fie, sá ne fie cu noroc!
Joaca joaca tot pe loc,
sá rasar¸ a busuioc.
Joaca joaca tot asa,
joaca si nu te lása.

Alunelu, alunelu, come to dance!
Let it be lucky for us!
Whoever dances the hora
will become big.
Whoever does not dance,
will remain small.

Alunelu, alunelu, come to dance!
Let it be lucky for us!
Dance, dance, right in place.
Let the sweet-basil bloom.
Dance, dance, just like this.
Dance and don’t let up.

ARDELEANA DE LA OTELUL ROSA

click to download lyrics

Cry for me, mother, in longing,
for I was your strong son.
I took care of you,
I wove your carpet.
But since I've been made a soldier
my life has been poisoned,
and I wander in foreign lands.
I shall die thinking of you!
How I long, mother,
for that brotherly forest,
for that land I have left,
for that forest grown unfamiliar to me.

Hey sweet little carriage with four oxen,
I like you very much!
I like even more the one who drives you,
who holds the whip in one hand
and snaps and cracks it
and loves his sweetheart."
“Hey sweetheart, I would beat you,
but my hands are tied
with a line of black thread.
I can't beat you, out of love."

Foaie verde siminoc,
Tzinetzi Ciuleandra pe loc,
Shi-nc-odata mai baietzi,
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Tzinetzi-o flacai asha,
Pina n-ajunge puica,
Shi-nc-o-data, mai baietzi,
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Intaritzi-o nitzelush
c-ajunge acush-acush,
Shi-nc-o-data, mai baietzi
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Mai intaritzi-o de-un pas
C-ajuns si n-a ramas
Shi-nc-o-data, mai baietzi
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Doua fire, doua paie,
Luatzi Ciuleandra la bataie
Shi-nc-o-data, mai baietzi
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Tot asha ca nu ma las,
Ca sint cu puica pe-un pas,
Shi-nc-o-data, mai baietzi
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Doua fire, doua paie,
Ia Ciuleandra la bataie
Shi-nc-o-data, mai baietzi
Hop-sh-asha-sh-asha.

Green leaf of 'siminoc',
Keep the circle in place,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Keep it like that, lads,
Until my darling catches up to me,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Speed it up just a little,
She is close to catch up with me,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Speed it up one more step,
she caught me up, but didn't stay,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Two straws, two grains,
Let's stomp* the Ciuleandra,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Keep it like that, don't slow it down,
'Cause I'm on same step with my darling,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Two straws, two grains,
Stomp the Ciuleandra now,
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.
